We reviewed 193 patients with thyroid nodules who were admitted and operated in the department of general surgery, Incheon Christian Hospital, from January 1980 to December 1990.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1)Female patients were predominate in 8.6 times than males. The peak incidence was 3 rd decade in benign(31.6%) and malignant nodules(28.6%).
2) The most common subjective symptoms were palpable mass, nervousness, palpitation, and fatigue, in order of frequency.
3) In the duration of illness, 49.2% of cases were less than 6 months.
4) The right-sided nodules were slightly more common.
5) There was no significance of thyroid scanning and thyroid function test in differentiating malignancy.
6) The incidence of malignancy was 18.1%. The benign nodules included adenomatous goiter in 120 cases(76%), follicular adenoma in 22 cases(13.9%), Hashimoto's thyroiditis in 6 cases(3.8%), and DeQuervain's thyroiditis in 1 cases(0.6%). The
malignant
nodules included papillary carcinoma in 17 cases(48.6%), follicular carcinoma in 2 cases(5.7%), mixed papillary-follicular carcinoma in 15 cases(42.8%), and one medullary carcinoma(2.9%).
